New, handmade, washable blankets of all styles are appropriate for Lubbock Project Linus blankets -- quilts, tied comforters, fleece blankets, and crocheted or knitted afghans in child-friendly colors.
Children can tell the difference between a commercially manufactured or purchased blanket and one made by someone, and that difference is what makes Project Linus blankets special. Purchased blankets are nice, but handmade blankets are from the heart. If you do not have the time or ability to hand craft a blanket (by machine or hand stitching/knitting), perhaps you would consider a monetary donation.
Additional requirements include:
● excellent quality
● free from contaminants (no smoky smells or chemicals)
● no buttons or embellishments that pose a choking hazard
● only 100% cotton, cotton-polyester blend, or fleece
The Lubbock Project Linus blankets are distributed to several organizations, each with slightly different needs, therefore we need ALL sizes of blankets.
The hospitals -- University Medical Center (UMC) and Covenant Children's continue to use the smaller blankets, as well as larger ones for older kids.
Both Lubbock Children's Home and Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) ask almost exclusively for the larger ones (those suitable for teenagers).
So . . . continue to make all sizes but, if you can, please think about making some of the larger ones.
